From the days of Era1 Engelsdorf was of high significance for rail traffic in the Leipzig region. Engelsdorf was famous for its huge shunting yard, its roundhouse and the workshop.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I found this scene in the quite instructive book Sächsische Eisenahnen auf alten Ansichtskarten by Claus Schlegel. This book is a fine collection of rail related postcards from the Royal Saxon times.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The structure is made of plasticard. The window frames are from company Auhagen. It is the model of an armoured railcar used by German Army in WW2 (Pardon – no era one). The model is a resin kit by model company “Attack” of Czech Republic. Scale is 1:72. Fitting wasn’t quite fine and details are low – so the kit was sitting around in my workbench trough the years.&lt;br /&gt;This winter I did some research on Zarist and Soviet armoured rail vehicles and build this one here for fun. A friend of mine gave me a Panzer III turret of Company Revell that was much better in detail than the resin offering. ES 2 has two sisters (ES 1 and ES 3). It was built in 1911 by HANOMAG. Electric parts were supplied by AEG. ES 2 saw some test runs in passenger traffic on the Dessau-Bitterfeld line. After World War 1 the machine was used in southern Germany (Baden).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1928 the loco was delivered to the Bau- und Verkehrsmuseum (Berlin Hamburger Bahnhof). After World War 2 it was left in the open and no one really cares about it. Some 40ty years later it was found in this desperate condition and it was handed over to the Berlin technique museum.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Several times I was told ES 2 was scrapped. Buy surprise I found it remains this September weekend at the outer depot of Berlin Verkehrsmuseum. Klaus Dieter Pfennig of &lt;a href="http://www.dit-modell.de/"&gt;http://www.dit-modell.de/&lt;/a&gt; allowed me to use a 1915 field post card of his collection. A really interesting prototype. Lettering was done with DIN Letters of TL Decals. The Prussian heraldic is from Ostmodel. Länderbahnen buffers by Company Weinert.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Frankfurt 6002 was seen in a World War 1 scene. I tried to the have a WW1 athmosphere with Lt. Ernst Udet and a trench mortar in front of the railcar. The available Model was an Era 2 vehicle from the mid 1930ties. I thought to backdate the model to a vehicle of the pre World War 1 era. Emil Konrad´s breaking book „Die Reisezugwagen der deutschen Länderbahnen“ (Here: Band 1: Preußen. Stuttgart 1982) is a great source to Länderbahnen rolling stock. I found a good pictorial source here and the backdating job was straight fore ward. An article of the building was published in “Länderbahnforum” of Tobias Frydman. Those multi-purpose or optional cars were called Fakultativwagen (not only a strange term to the British tongue). During the timeframe from 1890 to 1920 Fakultativwagen were the back bone in branch line and rural traffic.&lt;br /&gt;In passenger service those cars were mixed up with standard passenger coaches. In its freight role, they served as baggage vans, transported boxed goods and postal cargo. Because of its multipurpose factor those Fakultativwagen were also of great interest for military use. Saxon rail administration kept all Fakultativwagen (around 250 railcars) as planning reserve for military operations.&lt;br /&gt;During the last years Fakultativwagen thrilled me. I researched much, - build and re-build several Fakultativwagen. Most of the results were seen on epoche1.de. I modified the "official" water tower slightly adding new brickwork plastic cards. Scripture is done with Letraset.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For the paint I ´m using artist acrylics. First is a water thinned white wash to fill in the brick-spaces. This should dry for several hours. For the second step I am mixing umbra tones with plain red. I am not adding water - so paint is realy dry. Painting is done with a flat brush. Finaly I am highlighting single stones with even more colour. This adds texture. "Berlin Central-Viehof, Aufbau Verlag, Berlin 1996". There’s a really interesting picture in that book. It shows a transporting situation at the central yard somewhere around 1910 (see picture. 1). Found the situation close and dramatic. This picture is “moving” in many ways so I tried to reproduce it. The G car is Brother Fleischman’s Prussian Altona. I reworked it (new buffers, new lettering, something here and there) to have Gm “Posen 9092”. Following Nürnberg-Fürth (1835), Dresden-Leipzig (1837) it was the 3rd operational line in Germany. This year we celebrate its 170 anniversary.&lt;br /&gt;Well - some archaeology: What is remaining und what is still visible?&lt;br /&gt;Let me start here with the railroad workers settlement of Lichterfelde West. This four building settlement was raised in the late 1870ties for the rail workers of Prussian Railroad. This attack was the first coordinated tank mass attack in history. Using these new terrifying machines the British army tried to break the German lines. Hopes were around to drive the occupants back from Belgium and northern France. Those new war machines had a shocking impact on German defenders. British troops gained early success but German counterattacks slowed and repulsed the attack. In the aftermath some 250 abandoned and knocked out vehicles were left in the Cambrai sector. Some 100 of those tanks were recovered by the Germans.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is my rendition of tank number I -36 that was lost in the Cambrai sector. I found the picture in an old World War One book, published by company Bong &amp;amp; Co in the early 1920ties. The British tank is by company EMHAR in scale 1:72. The railcar is company Fleischmann. Like many Mecklenburg stations it was build / owned by Company Lenz &amp;amp; Co. Lenz handed this line over to the Mecklenburg Friedrich Franz Eisenbahn in 1890.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In December 2006 I visited Krakow am See by chance. Light was poor this day for taking pictures but Krakow was always on top of my archaeological visiting list. I took some fotos of the station and of the goods shed. The station seems to bee in a good condition but the shed is more on the desperate side.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;1./2. It was a place for modellers, artists, collectors and historians. It was also a place to present my approach in modelling to a wider and hopefully interested community. Meet many people from across this planet during the days of epoche1.de. Frequently this site has around 2.000 visitors per month. I guess that means 60 or 70 people know what you are doing and I enjoyed this small but active community very much.&lt;br /&gt;Epoche1 de is now history. It’s down for several months and several reasons. Some of you guys outside asked me to give epoche1.de another chance and to relaunch it. Guys! Thank you very much for that but … yes – and no. No, I didn’t have the nerve to put it back in 1:1. Yes I wanted to try something new.&lt;br /&gt;This blogging thing is something new to me. My hopes go out this place will be informative and interactive, lively and amusing, easily accessible and appealing to those interested in German railroad era one.
